How to Keep Your Dog Safe This Summer: Simple Tips for Happy, Healthy Adventures

The sun is shining, the days are longer, and adventure is calling – it must be summer! If you’re anything like us, that means more time outside with your four-legged friend, whether it’s sunny strolls, beach days, or garden lounging. But while summer is the perfect time to enjoy the great outdoors, it also comes with some risks for your pup.

From overheating to allergies, the warmer weather can be tough on dogs – so here are our top summer safety tips for keeping your dog cool, comfortable, and wagging all season long.

1. Be Aware of Heatstroke in Dogs

Dogs can’t cool themselves as easily as we can, so it’s no surprise that heatstroke is one of the biggest risks during summer.

Signs of heatstroke include:

  • Heavy panting or drooling
  • Signs of distress or confusion
  • Bright red gums
  • Vomiting or diarrhoea
  • Collapse or uncoordinated movements

If you suspect your dog is overheating, move them somewhere cool, offer a small amount of water, and call your vet straight away. Never use icy water – it can do more harm than good.

2. Walk Early (or Late!)

Avoid the midday sun and head out for walkies early in the morning or later in the evening when it's cooler. Not only will this keep your pup safer, but it makes your walk much more enjoyable too.

Pavements can scorch your dog’s paws. If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for their feet! Look out for limping, licking paws, or discolouration on their pads.

3. Keep Your Dog Cool

Whether you're at home or out and about, there are plenty of ways to help your pup beat the heat:

  • Set up a paddling pool or sprinkler in the garden
  • Use a cooling mat or damp towel for them to lie on (never drape it over them – that can trap heat)
  • Pop their favourite chew toy in the freezer for a chilly challenge

4. Hydration is Key

Just like us, dogs need to stay well-hydrated in hot weather. Make sure fresh water is available at all times, and always bring a bottle and portable bowl with you on walks.

Feeding kibble? Try adding a splash of water to their meals, or offer hydrating snacks like cucumber or watermelon (in small amounts, and no seeds!).

5. Never Leave Dogs in Hot Cars

Even on a mild day, a car can turn deadly within minutes. If it’s 22°C outside, the temperature inside a vehicle can soar to 47°C – that’s hot enough to be fatal. If you're heading somewhere dogs aren’t allowed, leave them at home in a cool, safe space.

6. Protect Against Sunburn

Did you know dogs can get sunburnt too? Especially those with white or light-coloured fur. Protect sensitive areas like their nose, ears, and belly with a pet-safe sunscreen. Not sure which one to use? Your vet can help recommend the right product.

7. Watch Out for Allergies

Pollen, grass, and even bug bites can trigger summer allergies in dogs. Look out for:

  • Itchy skin or licking paws
  • Watery eyes or sneezing
  • Bald patches or irritated skin

Regular grooming and paw wipes after walks can help reduce allergens. If your dog seems uncomfortable, have a chat with your vet.

Our accessories are designed to be easily washable – because we know a stylish dog is often a messy one too.

8. Swimming Safely

Some dogs love to splash about – and who can blame them? Swimming is a great way to cool off and burn energy, but always supervise your pup while they’re in the water.

Afterwards, gently dry their ears and fur to avoid irritation or infection, and make sure they rest to avoid exhaustion or low blood sugar.

9. Regular Grooming

Brushing your dog regularly in summer helps remove dead fur and keeps their coat lighter and healthier. For double-coated breeds, it also helps regulate their body temperature.

Add a quick collar and harness clean to your grooming routine – it helps prevent odours and keeps your pup feeling (and smelling) fresh!
