First Times: When should I Walk my Puppy?

You will no doubt be excited to let your puppy experience the outside world and have the best adventure and learn to love their walks. And no doubt you want to show them off to friends, family and other dogs!

While it’s important to socialise your dog and get them used to their environment, you do not want to put their health at risk.

It is recommended to take your dog for walks after they are vaccinated.

What are vaccinations?

They help protect your dog against diseases, making them vital when puppies go outside.

When can I get my dog vaccinated?

Vaccinations usually start from around 8 weeks old and they will need 2 sets of injections before they are fully protected.

The second set is usually 2-4 weeks after the first. Depending on where your dog comes from, they may have had their first set of injections and maybe their second depending on how long they have been there! Be sure whoever you are getting your dog from, you get their complete paperwork to pass onto your vet.

Puppy socialisation

You want your puppy to socialise right? But you also want them to be safe from diseases. If you isolate them they may grow to be anxious in their adult life. This is why it’s so important to introduce puppies to new experiences in a safe and risk-free way.

Before Vaccinations

It may be a good idea to carry your pup around your local area, introducing them to the outside world without risking their health. Their first walk also does not need to be the biggest park!

Making puppy friends

The more social interactions they can have as puppies, the better they socialise as adults. Just make sure that any dogs they meet have also had their vaccinations!
